Our team’s extensive experience in construction dewatering - with a thorough understanding of related environmental regulations, coupled with our safety record, specialized pumps and support equipment fleet keeps Aquatech as the leader in the industry in comprehensive groundwater control and groundwater management solutions.

WHAT IS DEWATERING?

Dewatering is the temporary removal of groundwater from soils, lowering and maintaining of the existing groundwater table to a lower target elevation which is comfortably below a planned excavation depth, this enables a safe, dry and stable geotechnical condition for the construction of deep foundations, structures and utilities to below what was the existing natural higher groundwater level.

Positive dewatering involves pre-drainage of groundwater prior to excavating, which includes groundwater extraction and depressurization and involves lowering of the water level to a safe distance below the target excavation depth prior to the excavation occurring. This is typically achieved with wells in the form of wellpoints, eductor wells, deep wells and/or sock. This also allows for a much more stable excavation and ground condition and avoids costly delays and lost productivity.

Passive dewatering (unwatering) is typically performed in the form of conventional sump pumping and entails excavating to the water table and pumping water from within the confines of the excavation as encountered. This is also employed when stormwater enters excavations and needs to be pumped out from filtered sump wells.

VACUUM WELLPOINT DEWATERING SYSTEMS

Common and versatile method of effective trench or excavation dewatering, ideal for shallow aquifers less than 7m/23ft below ground surface. Flexible dewatering system to address wide variety of soil conditions and permeability. Aquatech typically utilizes water jetting or CFA/Rotary drilling methods to install closely spaced 1 in/25mm up to 4in/100mm diameter wellpoints attached to a common surface header suction line attached to a diesel/electric driven high vacuum wellpoint pump.

VACUUM EDUCTOR DEWATERING SYSTEMS

Also known as vacuum ejector well systems, these are ideal for deeper drawdowns up to 30m/100ft below ground in low permeability soils. Jetting and/or rotary drill rigs are used to install these small diameter wells that are the most economical dewatering tool when tight spacing of wells is required, as one Eductor Pump Station can often operate up to 100 wells. The high vacuum is also effective in stabilizing soil conditions. Although eductor dewatering systems are not limited in drawdown like wellpoint systems, they are limited in the amount of volume they can efficiently handle, but they are an ideal tool in deep excavations that have saturated fine sand or silty soils, including where there are multiple water bearing zones at various depths that need to be dewatered or depressurized.

SUMP/TRENCH DEWATERING

Aquatech has a variety of specialized pumps that can manage surface or groundwater infiltration entering open excavations. Aquatech uses automated high efficiency solids handling portable electric, diesel or hydraulic powered pumps, typically installed in filtered sumps or large diameter sump wells inside the excavation. We also have stainless steel pumps available for low/high pH fluids for more industrial site applications.

DEEP WELLS

Ideal for larger volumes of groundwater in medium to high permeable formations, where Vacuum Eductor Well Systems were ideal for low flow and permeability formations. Aquatech utilizes rotary, dual rotary and reverse circulation drilling techniques to install wells with diameters of up to 24”/600mm. Deep wells are typically used to dewater excavations from 6 m/20ft to 30m/100 ft deep, but we have and can dewater to depths of as much as 300m/1000ft without staging. Electrical submersible turbine pumps can be selected based on depth and volume of water that needs to be pumped, solar powered pumps can also be used in some dewatering applications. The deep wells can also be vacuumized to increase discharge capacities or to drain finer soil formations by applying vacuum or a negative pressure to formation.

SOCK DEWATERING

Often the most cost-effective method of dewatering and with minimal disruption to your construction site. With no need for surface piping systems, horizontal or trenched tile systems can be quickly installed below ground using a trencher to depths up to 6m/20ft in well-draining sandy soil conditions - with the vacuum engine driven pumps attached at surface to the sock periodically.
